Low-GHG primary aluminum production with Carbo-Chloride Reduction
Aluminum Technologies’ Carbo-Chloride Reduction (CCR) technology produces low-GHG primary aluminum metal at a fraction of the cost of the current process. The process of producing primary aluminum requires prodigious quantities of electricity and emits dangerous levels of pollution, accounting for 2% of annual anthropogenic GHG emissions. CCR technology takes a different approach than the current process, which has been the industry standard for 140 years. Rather than electrolytically splitting naturally occurring aluminum oxide to produce metal, the CCR process first converts it to aluminum chloride, which is far more efficient to reduce to aluminum. CCR eliminates process emissions from the smelter, reduces electricity consumption by one-third, and captures approximately two and a half tons of CO2 per ton of metal produced.
