Biko Biolabs
Biko Biolabs — is developing a platform technology that will empower marginalized or under-resourced communities to solve problems at the local scale. Their first project is a plastic-to-soil technology, a technique for breaking down plastic waste into valuable compost. This allows the community to avoid landfilling, incinerating, or littering the plastic, while also supporting a circular economy and turning the waste into a valuable product.
Biko Biolabs focuses on secure, self-sufficient, sustainable solutions to universal basic needs: food, energy, medicine and materials. The diversity, size, scale, physical and economic isolation of small, remote, and marginalized communities uniquely calls for decentralized, low capital technologies using cheap, locally available inputs. We use biology to turn waste into stuff: Plastic film waste transformed into soil through a green catalyst that enables conventional composting. Industrial fungi grown on post-consumer textile waste. We pilot new ways to build food security: Decentralized, urban micro-farms growing culinary mushrooms ( www.fosteredfungi.com )
