Dear Friends of Greentown Houston,

As we approach the end of 2022, Greentown is not only impressed by all the progress made by our startups and the broader energy transition ecosystem this year, but deeply grateful for everyone’s dedication and efforts toward climate action. From accelerator programs, to building connections through networking, to our members’ countless accomplishments, there is a lot to celebrate!

This year, we focused on driving collaborations throughout the ecosystem, and are thrilled with the partnerships that were formed to advance diverse technologies. We had some all-star collaboration happen for the Low-Carbon Hydrogen Accelerator, which highlighted the importance of clean hydrogen and engaged the City of Houston. With Houston’s potential to become a robust hydrogen hub, we knew working with innovation experts like the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Shell, and the Urban Future Lab at NYU Tandon School of Engineering (UFL) was key to advancing our participants’ clean hydrogen solutions, and we’re thrilled with the connections and progress made! We also built up our network with universities across the state for the Texas Entrepreneurship Exchange for Energy (TEX-E)—empowering the next generation of climatetech talent is key to keeping the energy transition going, and we can’t wait to support students ready to face the challenge of climate change head on with innovation!

Beyond incredible partnerships, the Greentown community hit some pretty big milestones as well. This April, we celebrated the one-year anniversary of Greentown Houston—our first year flew by, but we’re thankful for every minute of it and how far we’ve come! (We haven’t just had progress happen inside the building, but outside as well: check out the vibrant new mural on our exterior, courtesy of artist and educator Hannah Bull!) Just last month, we held our second Houston Climatetech Summit, with hundreds of attendees coming in-person and tuning in virtually to explore climatetech commercialization. Thank you to all who participated for making the event a major success!

Last but certainly not least, we worked to center equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice in all we do, to ensure that the energy transition we’re powering is equitable and inclusive. In September, we created a platform for underrepresented founders in our community through our Access to Success event, featuring pitches from member companies, a member showcase, and networking. Next year, we’re excited to take this support for underrepresented founders to the next level with the launch of our new accelerator, Advancing Climatetech and Clean Energy Leaders (ACCEL), with Browning the Green Space! ACCEL will bolster Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) climatetech founders and provide access to resources that structural inequities put out of reach. Applications are still open, and close on Dec. 23; be sure to apply and share to your network before then!

We can’t wait for the exciting work 2023 has in store for our startups and Houston’s energy transition ecosystem; until then, we wish you a happy, healthy, and peaceful end of 2022!

Syzygy Plasmonics raised a $76M series C round to scale its all-electric photocatalytic reactor technology and expand operations.
Applied Bioplastics received an investment from 4WARD.VC that will advance its sustainable, plant-based plastic alternatives.
Enviro Power deployed its high-efficiency SmartWatt Boiler at Wesleyan University, converting heat that would otherwise be lost in traditional boilers into useful electricity.
Bucha Bio is moving into a larger office/lab space and plans to expand its team following its recent seed round.
