Happy New Year! 2024 is poised to be a major year for climatetech, and as analysts, investors, journalists, and other experts offer up their predictions for this year’s climatetech areas to watch, Greentown’s featuring just a sampling of our members innovating in these key categories. Read about our startups that are creating hydrogen from recycled plastics, commercializing land restoration, delivering pure drinking water via atmospheric water generation, and more.

We’re off to a strong start at the regional level as well; in case you missed it, Houston was identified as one of four Texas cities to receive about $70M in government funding toward a “hydrogen-fueling corridor.”

Speaking of clean hydrogen—an innovation area key to both our local energy transition ecosystem and climatetech writ large—you’re invited to our Hydrogen Industry Networking event on Feb. 20 for an afternoon with our startups that are pioneering this technology. Other upcoming events at Greentown Houston include Empowerment Through Investment on Feb. 27—a Black History Month iteration of The Ion’s Blackstreets series that will feature a panel of Black climatetech investors—and a March 20 Transition On Tap networking event to kick off CERAWeek.

Member Milestones

Revterra was awarded a $1M piloting opportunity with ADNOC for its novel flywheel batteries made from recycled steel.
Cemvita was chosen as a winner of the World Economic Forum’s Sustainable Aviation Challenge. Verne, a Greentown Boston member, and Air Company, a Carbon to Value Initiative Year 1 participant, were also selected.
Fervo Energy was named to Cleantech Group’s Global Cleantech 100 list, along with several Boston-based Greentown members and Greentown alumni.

Latest News from TEX-E

The Texas Entrepreneurship Exchange for Energy (TEX-E) is a first-of-a-kind collaboration among The University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, University of Houston, Rice University, and Prairie View A&M University—powered by Greentown and MIT’s Martin Trust Center for Entrepreneurship—to create a powerful, student-driven entrepreneurship ecosystem in Texas.

TEX-E recently opened applications for its second annual TEX-E Prize, a multi-round startup competition for Texas students who are developing innovative technologies and business models to advance the energy transition and address climate change. Winners will receive a total of $50,000 in cash prizes to advance their ventures, and applications are open through Feb. 9. The program also named David Pruner as its first-ever executive director. David brings more than 30 years of experience across energy, management consulting, financial services, and higher education to TEX-E, and his expertise in and passion for the energy transition will play a critical role at TEX-E as it strives to have an even greater impact across Texas.
