Dear Friends of Greentown Houston,

This summer has been a scorcher so far, and as temperatures soar here in Houston and across the globe, our startups are hard at work developing solutions to combat climate change and help communities adapt.

Houston’s energy innovation ecosystem is also hot (in a much more positive way)—Startup Genome listed Houston as a top emerging startup city in North America, and SmartAsset ranked the region as the No. 5 best place in the United States for green jobs. We are thrilled to see this momentum, and are continuing to create opportunities for this thriving innovation region to connect with our community of 75+ member companies.

Here at Greentown, we love opening our space to leaders who can engage and empower others while sharing their expertise with our startups. So it goes without saying that we were beyond excited to host serial entrepreneur and politician Andrew Yang for a conversation with Greentown climatetech entrepreneurs Janice Tran of Kanin Energy, Anna Dai of Varea Energy, and Katie Mehnert of ALLY Energy, along with Rice University’s Ginger Koto Vaughn and the Asian Chamber of Commerce Houston’s Paul Gor; check out more from the event in EnergyCapitalHTX!

We were also proud to welcome the Renewable Energy Alliance Houston last week for a networking event and workshop focused on teaching early-career professionals about energy transmission and the power grid.

NW NA is leveraging its extremely high-power electric charging stations, distributed electricity storage units, and new micro-electricity production units to make the energy transition accessible to everyone.

Member Milestones

Capture6—a Carbon to Value Initiative Year 3 participant that removes carbon from the atmosphere while producing clean water and other industrial products from seawater or other saltwater inputs—received a grant valued at more than $8M from the California Energy Commission under the Commercialization Industrial Decarbonization (CID) program.
Kanin Energy, a startup that uses baseload electricity to enable heavy industry to decarbonize its operations, announced its Co-founder and CEO Janice Tran was nominated for a Pritzker prize.
EarthBond, DrinKicks, and Thola were named as semifinalists for Pharrell’s Black Ambition Prize.
Amogy sold its first pre-order for its Zero Emission Powerpack to a Norwegian shipowner.
Fervo Energy completed a performance demonstration of its commercial pilot, generating 3.5 MW of electricity through geothermal power.
Tycho Solutions was selected for Rice Alliance’s 2023 Clean Energy Accelerator.

What Do You Want to See in Greentown Houston’s Wet Lab?

As we’ve mentioned previously, we’re charting the operational needs for our future Houston wet lab and need your input!

Our experience building a wet lab at our Boston incubator five years ago yielded an impactful innovation space for many cutting-edge startups, but part of what makes Greentown unique is that we build our programs, offerings—and of course our facilities!—based on feedback from our startups, partners, and friends in the climatetech ecosystem.

So with that, if you’re an entrepreneur or innovator who could benefit from a wet lab, please let us know what you’d like to see in there. What would help advance your technology? Dedicated fume hoods? Reverse osmosis deionized water? Hazardous waste management? What resources would you benefit from?

And if you represent a corporation or supplier that might be interested in supporting our wet lab, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

This wet lab is being built in partnership with Ion District, Rice Management Company, Shell, and others.

At our next Investor Speaker Series event, we’re celebrating efforts to create an equitable fundraising landscape. Sept. 12: ACCEL Showcase
You don’t want to miss the showcase for ACCEL, an accelerator program for BIPOC-led startups from Greentown and Browning the Green Space!
