2025 is in full swing here at Greentown!

We’re gearing up for our first public event of the year—Canary Live Houston on Jan. 30, where Canary Media will explore Texas’s clean-hydrogen economy and how the state became the United States’s largest clean-energy market. And CERAWeek is just a couple of months away, so you’re invited to join us for a special CERAWeek edition of our Transition On Tap networking event on March 13.

Our accelerator programs are also underway, with Greentown Go Make 2025 accepting startup applications through Jan. 23. This startup-corporate partnerships accelerator with Evonik will advance sustainable innovations in the personal-care industry that reduce products’ manufacturing-related emissions and end-of-life environmental impact. Meanwhile, ACCEL just closed its Year 3 applications—stay tuned for that program’s cohort announcement in the coming weeks!

And in other exciting news, this week we announced the appointment of Naheed Malik as Greentown’s new CFO. Malik is a strategic finance executive with over 25 years of experience, and in this role she’ll lead all aspects of finance, accounting, and human resources for the organization. We’re thrilled to have her on board as Greentown seeks to build on our track record and expand our impact in the years to come!

ICYMI: Greentown Deepens Ties within Houston Ecosystem, Raises $4M+ in Funding

In December, we were thrilled to announce that Greentown raised more than $4M in funding from a dynamic mix of partners across our ecosystems of Houston, TX and Somerville, MA. The funding was provided by a joint partnership between Houston and Massachusetts investors and entities, including Bobby Tudor, CEO of Artemis Energy Partners and Chairman of the Houston Energy Transition Initiative at the Greater Houston Partnership; David Baldwin, Co-founder of OpenMinds and TEX-E and Partner, SCF Partners; Rice University; MassDevelopment, Massachusetts’ development finance agency and land bank; and the City of Somerville.

This diverse group of partners shines a spotlight on the synergies of our two home ecosystems—their entrepreneurial spirit and leadership, engineering strength, brilliant business minds, and collaborative efforts to tackle major challenges like climate change. Building on Greentown’s strong track record of supporting more than 575 startups and its expansion to Houston in 2021 as the city’s first-ever climatetech incubator, this injection of capital reflects the important role Greentown plays in its ecosystems. Further, it underscores the investors’ and partners’ long-standing commitment to catalyzing innovative climate and energy-transition technologies to help address the climate crisis.

In tandem with this funding announcement, Greentown proudly introduced our newly appointed board of directors, featuring prominent leaders from the Greater Houston and Greater Boston climatetech and energy innovation, entrepreneurship, and investment industries. We're excited to have Tudor serve as Greentown's board chair.

Member Milestones

Advanced Ionics, the developer of a new class of green-hydrogen electrolyzers aimed at accelerating decarbonization, raised $6.7M from strategic investors including Greentown partner Clean Energy Venture Group.
Thiozen signed a conditional commercial agreement with a midstream customer to install its first commercial unit at the customer's Alberta sour-gas plant. This project is backed by a $3.2M award Thiozen received from Emission Reduction Alberta last year.
Cemvita, whose engineered microbes transform CO2 and other wastes into valuable compounds, established a subsidiary in Brazil.
Greentown member Mars Materials and Carbon to Value Initiative alum Mitico were awarded grants by Columbia Technology Ventures’s Carbontech Development Initiative.
Greentown alum Fervo Energy, which delivers next-generation, carbon-free geothermal energy, secured $255M in funding—$135M in corporate equity, $120M via a letter of credit and term loan facility. Fervo Energy was the Houston startup that raised the most capital in 2024, according to InnovationMap.
Greentown alum Amogy raised $56M for its ammonia-to-power technology, including from the investment arms of Greentown partners Aramco and BHP.
