This month, we hosted a ribbon cutting for a brand new resource for our startups—Emerson’s DeltaV Automation Platform. Automation plays a key role in enabling a startup's journey to standardization and scalability, and we’re thrilled to provide our members access to these two units—generously donated by Greentown partners Emerson and Puffer! This equipment will allow members to prototype, accelerate their technologies into pilot scale and beyond, optimize processes for high-quality products, and implement smart foundations for accessing contextualized data. Thank you to everyone who joined us at the ribbon cutting during our May Transition On Tap event!

In other event news, this week we hosted the year three kickoff of the Texas Exchange for Energy and Climate Entrepreneurship (TEX-E), featuring 87 newly selected fellows from Texas universities. The day-long gathering included perspectives from energy industry professionals, investors, and entrepreneurs on Houston’s economic future and its current innovation ecosystem. Member Milestones

Element Resources and Greentown partner Rio Tinto have signed a surface lease agreement at the Rio Tinto U.S. Borax mine site in Boron, CA. The deal is for the development of a green-hydrogen production facility, powered by a dedicated off-grid-solar electric-generation facility.
Kanin Energy signed a power purchase agreement for a first-of-its-kind partnership with Tallgrass, the University of Dayton, and the AES Corporation to deliver a sustainable waste-heat-to-power project that offsets the university’s consumption and reduces its carbon footprint.
Revterra, a startup developing a grid-stabilizing kinetic battery, won the ADNOC Decarbonization Challenge at COP28, along with a $1M piloting opportunity.
Cemvita announced "a significant breakthrough enabling the company to produce substantial quantities of its sustainable oil from waste carbon sources.” Cemvita’s tech is shown to be a drop-in replacement for palm oil and will be converted into sustainable aviation fuel by its partners.
Syzygy Plasmonics announced a successful demonstration of its all-electric CO2-to-fuel production pathway in its project with RTI International, sponsored by Greentown partners Equinor Ventures and Sumitomo Corporation of Americas.
Solidec—whose electrolyzer platform captures carbon and manufactures chemicals using only air, water, and renewable electricity—won the Outstanding Achievement in Climate Solutions Prize from the Liu Idea Lab for Innovation and Entrepreneurship's H. Albert Napier Rice Launch Challenge, hosted by Rice University.
MicroEra Power, a startup developing a thermal-energy-storage system to decarbonize buildings, was selected to participate in the Scale For ClimateTech cohort.
Moonshot Compost surpassed 1 million pounds of food waste diverted from landfill in its composting project with Rice University.
Greentown alum Fervo Energy, which is working to deliver next-generation, carbon-free geothermal energy, partnered with Turboden to advance the energy production of its Cape Station project.
Greentown alum Ohmium—a green-hydrogen company that designs, manufactures, and deploys advanced proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer systems—is partnering with H2 Green Mining to develop green-hydrogen projects that will help decarbonize mining operations in Chile.
Greentown alum Energy Toolbase, whose software platform enables solar and energy-storage developers to deploy projects more efficiently, deployed two energy storage systems with Socomec in Hanford, CA.

The Houston Ion District Investor Activation Program—a collaboration between Greentown and The Ion to educate and activate the region’s investor community to catalyze climatetech solutions—is hosting its second workshop on May 21! Co-led by Greentown member Nisha Desai, founder of Intention, and Mitra Miller, VP of the Houston Angel Network, this event will cover topics including general trends in climate technology, what the landscape looks like, and why so many investors are rushing to invest in climate solutions.

Startups: Apply to the Carbon to Value Initiative

Applications are open for Year 4 of the Carbon to Value Initiative—a collaboration from the Urban Future Lab at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, Greentown, and Fraunhofer USA designed to catalyze a thriving carbontech ecosystem. For this year’s accelerator cohort, we’re looking for startups at TRL 4-7 that are developing carbontech solutions across carbon conversion to added-value products, carbon capture, and carbon sequestration and removal.
